Salk Middle School STEM Magnet Program

Innovating Today. Inspiring Tomorrow.

Salk Middle School is a Pre-Engineering STEM Magnet School serving grades 6–8 within the Northwest Suburban Integration School District (NWSISD). Our program connects every content area to the cornerstones of science, technology, engineering, and math, preparing students to think critically, collaborate effectively, and solve real-world problems.

Hands-On, Minds-On Learning

At Salk, learning is active. Students explore big ideas through inquiry, project, and problem-based learning, taking ownership of their education. Whether they’re designing a prototype, conducting an experiment, or crafting a research project, Salk students use processes like the scientific method, the engineering design process, and the artistic design process to bring their ideas to life.

Signature experiences such as Science Fair and History Day connect learning across subjects, guiding students through organizing action steps, researching authentic questions, and communicating results with purpose.

Families and Community: Partners in Learning

Our families are a vital part of our STEM community. We engage them through events like STEM Family Night, the Salk 5K Fun Run, music concerts, academic celebrations, and opportunities to serve as guest speakers or judges for Science Fair and History Day.

As part of NWSISD, Salk is proud to align with magnet pathways at Weaver Lake, Rogers, University Avenue, and the high school engineering and biomedical programs at Blaine and Coon Rapids High Schools. Together, these programs create a seamless K–12 STEM experience.
